In a significant move aimed at improving the lives of North Carolina’s youth impacted by domestic violence, WellCare of North Carolina has announced a $100,000 donation to Camp HOPE America. This initiative, which supports children affected by domestic violence and trauma, comes as part of WellCare’s ongoing efforts to foster healthier, safer communities across the state.
The funds will be distributed to nine Family Justice Centers across North Carolina, bolstering their support for Camp HOPE America. Camp HOPE is a week-long overnight program that provides a safe space for children dealing with the long-lasting effects of trauma. Through a combination of therapeutic activities and mentorship, the camp helps young participants heal, build resilience, and envision brighter futures.
“We are committed to the well-being of North Carolina’s communities, and this partnership with Camp HOPE America is a critical step in shaping a healthier future for our state,” said Shaune Lancit, Director of Community Engagement at WellCare of North Carolina. “By investing in our youth, we’re investing in the future of North Carolina. We want to ensure that every child has the opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive.”
North Carolina’s Family Justice Centers Leading the Way
North Carolina boasts the second-largest Family Justice Center network in the nation, demonstrating its leadership in offering comprehensive, streamlined services to victims of abuse. These centers, in partnership with Camp HOPE America, aim to transform the lives of families affected by domestic violence.
Catherine Johnson, Interim Director of Camp HOPE America and Director of the Guilford County Family Justice Center, emphasized the critical role Camp HOPE plays in the healing process. “Camp HOPE America’s program provides a safe space for children to not only heal but to grow into healthy, confident adults. We deeply appreciate WellCare’s investment, which will help many of these young individuals find hope and a brighter future.”
A Broader Commitment to Community Well-Being
This donation is part of a larger series of investments made by WellCare to strengthen North Carolina communities. Earlier this year, WellCare donated $1.95 million to The Umbrella Center, which provides holistic services to survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and elder abuse. The company has also supported life skills workshops aimed at empowering young adults transitioning out of foster care through the Hope Center at Pullen.
Beyond these larger contributions, WellCare is also making strides in supporting high-risk communities through a microgrant program with Communities in Schools of North Carolina. This program focuses on enhancing family engagement and introducing innovative tools to improve outcomes for students and families across the state.
